What a great topic for the dinner table! Personally, I could handle all of the rides until I hit my early 20's- then Sky Whirl became my #1 gut-churner. I almost lost it near the end of what was my last turn on that ride. Never ventured on board again! As for the worst ride overall? I would ...

More "Historic Documents" . . .

More Grams, Employee Handbooks and other documents, including internal procedure memos, have been added to my photo album under "Misc. Stuff". Yes indeed, these papers are destined for a place in history- just like the original copies of the Declaration of Independence and Lincoln's Gettys...

The GRAM - Rampage controversy of 1983

(I don't recall if I've already told this story before, so forgive me if this is a repeat!) Back in 1983, Tech Services was getting a day in the spotlight. We were going to be on the front page of The GRAM. At this same time, the White Water Rampage was under construction, and Tech Services had a bi...

Re: Sounds of Great America

[quote="GreatAmerica4ever"]Another great topic to chat about...what are some of the sounds that you remember at Marriott's Great America? quote] Strange you should bring up this topic- Just yesterday I ran across some old cassette tapes from the early '80s. Back then my best friend, his br...

The one house I still remember was an older farmhouse-style home located directly across the street from the station for the American Eagle. I would imagine the noise would have made continuing to live in it impossible. Its interesting that you mention that section of land. There was actually anoth...

Oh, man, where does one start? Captain Morgan's was probably my favorite, with the clam chowder, scallops and fried shrimp. Buffet Le Grande was awesome, if you had a few extra bucks to spend. Chicken dinners at the Boarding House, ribs and corn at the restaurant connected to Snowshoe Saloon (geez, ...

Re: 1976 Gurnee Journey

Did anyone from Santa Clara participate in the Gurnee Journey in 1976. The journey happened in August, when the management of the Gurnee park began to realize that alot of midwest colleges and high schools began class in mid August. This created a shortage of employees at the Gurnee park. A little ...

I have been meaning to ask what type of affects occured a the head. There is a limit switch located prior to the tunnel, and Ive noticed the speaker in the nose. When I inquired, I was allways told the lights and the effects over there never worked and they just gave up. I can only remember the &qu...

Awesome! I've wanted to see this commercial for SO many years. Several friends of mine and I were "extras" in the train- I think we rode it over twenty times during filming. A few of us left when they had most of the shots completed, but others stayed and rode it many more times. I'd had e...

Re: Gurnee community question

There always seemed to be a love/hate relationship between the park and the town during the Marriott years. The town LOVED the revenue stream from ...

TS1 -- what was the "sound rack" in the control room for? I don't recall there being music or anything like that in the ride queue ... or was that sounds for Orleans Place in general? Nope, no music. It contained the amps and electronics for the repetitive "safety spiel" (featur...

Re: Remains of the Gurnee Edge...

Was the building in this photo the Edge's old control booth? Wow. I'm surprised the building is still there. I like the old footing with all of the anchor bolts in front of little tables. Nice atmosphere for a romantic lunch. Randy V. got it right- this was the control room for the Edge (not to be ...

I loved the cheeseburgers in the cafeteria. I also remember getting free sodas when it got over 90 degrees. I was 16 and thought that was a cool perk. Wow! I forgot about that perk. :D Now I remember taking advantage of it many times . . . I was practically addicted to Diet Coke back then  PPG
