What happened to the working headlights and grill on the front of the Whizzer trains? The headlights looked like a cool effect.

The headlights were manufactued by mercedes benz, and are extremly costly. Simple as that.

Pretty much. People would keep stealing them. In Germany they were easy to come by and cheaper, but in the states they were a hot item.
That and the electrical generator and battery system that kept them lit was worn out and expensive to replace.
