Weird memory ...

Post by RandyV »

Random memory:

Why was it that the temp in the bathrooms was always about 12 below zero? :) Seriously, I remember the bathrooms at the park being really, really, really cold all the time -- which was great for escaping the blistering hot midwest summer heat.

Was SC that way?

I guess I never really noticed that. When you say that Randy, are you including now days or just back in the days of Marriott's and early SFGAm?

Now that it was mentioned, the bathrooms are nice and chilly during the summer!! The air conditioners must be huge ones for that small area of space. This was still true at Six Flags this past summer.

I love the bathrooms during the summer. Sometimes, I just stand in front of it for a few mins to cool off.

The AC also makes the floor sweat and makes everything really humid.

^Cold air makes you feel better but not the smell! I guess in the summer it is pretty noticeable. It's a good idea to have good AC in the bathrooms just not on colder days.

Freezing Restrooms

Post by MGA1 »

I started as an Area Host in Gurnee in 1977 (Marriott year 2). I remember the freezing restrooms. I also remember having to clean those restrooms...yuck. The restrooms originally had a through-the-wall mounted window air conditioning unit. It was located on the rear wall of the restrooms to the left of the large wall mirror. At that time, anyone could walk up to the air conditioner and open the control panel and either crank the AC way down or turn it off completely. Those AC units were also electric heaters. There were AC and HEAT push button controls on the control panels.

I think those through-the-wall units were removed in '79 or '80 and replaced with big central air conditioning/heat units. The central air units had a thermostat locked inside a small plastic box mounted on the restroom wall.

^Thanks for the info. I'm surprised you could be able to control the AC and heat.

You're right about escaping the heat, but not the smell, The best place to cool off is always Sky Trek Tower.

I remember a couple of teenagers got busted 'going at it' in the bathroom in the summer of 1977. I had to go #2 and then I heard noises that were not normal for a bathroom. Before I left, security was all over the bathroom, 4 of them. They opened all the stall doors, including mine, until they caught them in the act. Those crazy '70s.
