Original plans for the Great Southwest Territory????

Post by MGA1 »

I was wondering if anyone has ever seen any of the original plans for what Marriott envisioned for Gurnee's Great Southwest? Was it pretty much the same layout that Six Flags eventually built there? Was there ever talk about also building a Great Southwest area in Santa Clara?

There must have been some original design plans for the Great Southwest area back in 1977 since the Southern Cross sky ride already had a station there in Gurnee.

Another thread mentioned that when the Turn of the Century was transformed into The Demon in 1980, it was the first ride that departed from the area's theme. Actually, the reason The Demon was built with all the rock formations and additional berms & landscaping was so it would "blend in" to the Great Southwest area which is located behind The Demon. I suspect that The Demon's entrance line would have been relocate and the ride would have become the major ride for the Great Southwest since County Fair was scheduled to get the American Eagle coaster in 1981.
