Very cool! A couple things I noticed...In Yankee Harbor, the "future" Heritage Theater never was built, that space was a landscaped berm (hiding the view of the service road) until Tidal Wave was built in that location. In Yukon Territory, what is the name on the Snowshoe/Klondike Cafe bui...

Yea! Thanks Steven. My lone picture from Great America is posted. I hope someone can help me remember the other employees names in the picture. I think the first girl on the left was named Diane (but I'm not 100% sure). The man that's partially hidden in the far left background with the light blue s...

Well, I can fill you in on the story but it really will only bring back memories to those who worked in Admission Services in '80-'82. IRON CLAW and Diaper Drawers were nicknames (unwelcomed) of two managers. IRON CLAW was the seasonal Admissions Area Supervisor. She was a Pi Phi at Northwestern who...

Back when I first heard the story about the ghosts in the attic, I half-believed it. After I heard the rumor about people doing it in the attic, I figured the noises people heard below in the store weren't made by ghosts.

Tech Services 1 has the best archive of old Great America stuff! The only thing I have saved is one Marriott's Great America key chain & one picture of myself working at the Barbara Mandrell concert in 1981

The "free" bumper stickers that the parking lot crew applied in Gurnee were different than the bumper stickers they sold in the merchandise shops. As Steven mentioned, if you didn't want a bumper sticker placed on your car, you were suppose to leave the sun visors down. Back in 1976-1978 p...

Tram-o-rama

During the Marriott years, there were several "traditions" that started and were carried forward year after year. One of the more interesting ones was Tram-o-rama. It was an annual intra-departmental competition sponsored by the parking lot crew. During the early afternoon on a pre-announc...

MGA's own Merry Maids? (wardrobe question)

In the early Marriott years, there was a group of all female employees that wore Kelly green 100% polyester pants and a white 100% polyester window-pane checked short sleeve collared shirt. These ladies would clean the offices located throughout the park & they also cleaned the Guest Relations o...

The Plush Horse attic

There was a small merchandise shop called "The Plush Horse" in County Fair located across from the Eagle's Flight station. It sold stuffed animals...mostly Looney Tunes character merchandise and some carousel horse figurines. I always thought that was a very clever name for the store since...

Marriott's GREAT AMERICA bumper stickers

Who else remembers the Marriott's GREAT AMERICA bumper stickers the parking lot guys used to paste on every car in the parking lot? It was a plain white background with a small Marriott's (in Old English font in black) in the upper left corner just above the big words GREAT AMERICA in the signature ...

I'm in the Guest Book

Hi EagleMom, yes, I've been in the VIP/Consulate Lounge...actually I've been in them at both Great Americas. The Consulate Lounges were initially planned to be in-park apartments for the Marriott family when they visited, however, by the time the parks were under construction, the plan had changed. ...

Seasons Passes in Gurnee

I worked in Guest Relations in Gurnee in 1980 and don't recall having Seasons Passes. However, I was an Admissions Services Supervisor for 1981 and we definitely did have Seasons Passes for sale in Gurnee. I don't remember what the price was but I know they weren't advertised on the ticket price sig...

Hopefully someone has a better memory than me, but I definitely remember Marriott had many Street Entertainers in the park during the early years. From what I remember Great America Marching Band - Carousel Plaza & throughout the park Male and Female BarberShop-type Quartets in HomeTown Square C...

Trolley/Sipper Cart crash

During the 1978 summer, I worked on Logger's Run from Spring opening weekend. When the park went to 7-day operation, we got several new crew members at Logger's Run. Our crew was mostly hs/college age males with 2 female leads (hi Sheila & Cathy). One of our new summer crew members was Mary, an ...
