1979 video: Gurnee Skyrides

Post by steven »

Thanks to the generosity of George Jen, GREATAMERICAparks.com has received ultra-rare video footage of the Gurnee park from 1979. George's father, also named George Jen, took his family to Marriott's GREAT AMERICA in 1979. And he took along a video camera, at a time when consumer video cameras were new on the scene and were quite rare. George's father captured the sights and sounds of a 1979 day at Marriott's GREAT AMERICA in Gurnee. We are beyond delighted to be able to share the video with you.

The first look at the 1979 video to appear on GREATAMERICAparks.com is a compilation of scenes of the much-missed Gurnee skyrides: Delta Flyer / Eagle's Flight and Southern Cross. This fourteen-minute video is a 300 MB download. Please be patient while enough of the video downloads before it starts to play. The video WILL start to play, but it takes a while. Just wait for it. It's worth it! Thanks, George!

A huge, huge thanks to George! This footage is really incredible to watch (and the quality is outstanding given the age of the source material). I can't help but think about how the park has lost some of its original charm over the years. Funny how they mention the Southwest Territory is "coming next year."

Thanks for sharing this material!
